Tips for Winter Weather
- Accelerate slowly, doing otherwise could result in getting stuck or sliding into something.
- take your time, it is harder to slow down on icy roads.
- make sure you add a larger gap in between you and the vehicle in front of you. This should be about 8-10 seconds behind.
- Know what type of brakes you have and how you should use them properly.
- Do not stop fully if you can. Stoping increases the chances that your vehicle will become stuck in the snow.
- Don't put too much gas into getting up hills. This could make your tires spin and result in a stoppage.

Be Ready For The Next Storm
A storm can come about so quickly, we may not even have time to react when the next forecast shows heavy rain and lightning. It is important to prepare before the storm occurs. Some good ideas to help prepare yourself are have non-perishable food and bottled water available. Keep flashlights easily accessible and know where they are before the power goes out. Crank powered flashlights and AM/FM radios are highly recommended. Stay inside; you never know when a tree or power line could fall. Do not open the fridge or freezer as doing so will result in food to go bad quickly. Last but not least, keep extra pet food if you own a cat or dog, etc.

What to do if an Earthquake Strikes
1. Stand under a doorway, as this is likely a sturdier spot than many other places in your home.
2. Keep a 3-day water/food supply in case you are trapped within your home.
3. If you can, turn off the gas and water manes.
4. Stay indoors until shaking stops.
5. Stay away from things that can fall on you.
6. If outdoors, stay away from buildings and drop to the ground.

Protect Your Property
SERVPRO of University City is constantly handling water and storm damage and making it "Like it never even happened." Here are a few things to do before potential flooding. Always be prepared because a flood or emergency could happen at any moment. it is always a good idea to have an emergency kit made before something occurs. Make sure to keep at least a 3 day supply of food and water at all times because you must be prepared in case a natural disaster occurs and leaving the house is improbable. Lining doors on the ground floor, especially garage doors, with sandbags could potentially save you from getting water in the home.

Here Are Some Tips To Prevent House Fires
Some Tips from Traveler's Insurance Agency...
- Check the electrical cords throughout your home for signs of fraying, and replace all frayed wires.
- Do not pinch or cover electrical cords with items such as rugs.
- Be aware of the capacity of your home's electrical system. Do not overload your circuits. If you have questions about your home's electrical system, you may want to consult a licensed electrician.
- Understand the difference between surge protectors and power strips—both allow you to plug in multiple electronic devices, but only the surge protector will help protect these devices from a power spike. Use surge protectors to protect valuable electronic devices, such as computers and televisions.

Supermarket Fire
SERVPRO of University City took on a large scale fire job. There was a fire inside of a supermarket. Luckily, someone acted immediately and put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher. This could have been a lot worse, but the damage was already done. There was fire extinguisher discharge all over the frozen food section. SERVPRO was called in and we worked on the job for about 4 days until the affected area was restored back to normal! If you or someone you know experiences a commercial fire loss, be sure to let them know we take those types of things on. Call us at 215-877-6653.

Call us when you find your commercial property flooded
This week SERVPRO of University City took on a job at an apartment building where one of the washing machines had a malfunction and leaked. There was water and suds everywhere so we came in and diffused the situation. Our team started by using heavy-duty water extractors to get the bulk of the water off the floor and out of the building. The next step was to lay down equipment like dehumidifiers and air movers to speed up the drying process. Porous items such as cardboard, paper, and drywall all absorb moisture during an event like this so it is imperative to get these things dry. Call SERVPRO of UniversityA City at 215-877-6653 when you find yourself with water damage.

SERVPRO of University City Does Professional Cleaning
Did you know that SERVPRO of University City does professional cleaning? Give us a call at 215-877-6653 for more information on the services we provide!

Household Mold/Mildew
Mold and Mildew within your home can be very detrimental to your health when it isn't addressed correctly. Many times homeowners will try to tackle a mold removal job themselves. It may seem like a doable job at the time, but most likely the mold will return quickly after it was "removed." Homeowners will tend to use bleach and it does look like the mold is gone after a solid cleaning. Once the chlorine in the bleach evaporates, it leaves the water that was in the bleach on the affected area and as a result, mold grows back again. Please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of University City at 215-877-6653 when you spot mold in your home.

Residential Storm Damage
Weather can often differ from region to region and in our case, we're in the northeastern region of the U.S. This means we get a pretty wet and rainy season during the year. This year has been particularly bad regarding rainstorms. All the rain has softened up the ground allowing water to seep through it faster. Pictured is a home we did a job after heavy rain caused water to leak into the basement. We were able to take on the in-home disaster within a couple of days. Call SERVPRO of Overbrook/Wynnefield when your home suffers damage from a storm!
